Machu Picchu Circuits
Machu Picchu Circuit 1 (Panoramic Circuit)
Circuit 1 has 4 routes: route 1-A, 1-B, 1-C and 1-D, each offering a unique perspective of the citadel. Below is a summary of each. Please note that routes 1-C and 1-D are only available during the high season, which runs from June 1 to October 15 and from December 30 to 31, 2024.
Route 1-A: Machu Picchu Mountain
This challenging hike takes you to the summit of Machu Picchu Mountain, an impressive peak that towers over the ancient city, offering spectacular views of the ruins and surrounding landscapes. The hike takes approximately 3 hours in total and requires good physical condition.
With this ticket, you will not have access to the lower areas of Machu Picchu, but you will enjoy the classic view ideal for photos. The maximum time allowed in the archaeological complex with this ticket is 7 hours.
Route 1-B: Upper Terrace Route
With this route, you will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Machu Picchu from the Guardian’s House, an iconic location ideal for capturing the classic Machu Picchu photo. Again, you will not have access to the lower part of Machu Picchu.
This is an excellent option for those who primarily want to get a great photo of Machu Picchu without exploring the ruins in depth. The maximum time of stay is 2.5 hours.
Route 1-C: Intipunku Sun Gate Route (available only in high season)
This route is the same as Route 1-A, with the difference that it also includes the hike to the Intipunku Sun Gate during high season. This used to be a strategic viewpoint for the Incas. The hike takes approximately 2 hours round trip.
From there, you will enjoy a privileged view of Machu Picchu, which usually only Inca Trail hikers can experience. The maximum time allowed is 4 hours.
Route 1-D: Inca Bridge Route (only available in high season)
This route takes you to the Inca Bridge, an impressive construction over a chasm that once served as a hidden entrance to Machu Picchu, is the highlight of this adventure. This winding road, cut into sheer cliff faces, offers stunning views of the untamed landscape and reveals some of the ingenious defensive mechanisms of the Inca civilization.
From the main entrance gate to Machu Picchu, you should walk about 15 – 20 minutes (750 m) to reach the Inca Bridge registration booth. This is generally a less crowded route, allowing for a quieter experience. The maximum time allowed is 3 hours.
Machu Picchu Circuit 2 (Classic Circuit)
The main archaeological site, known as “Llaqta” (in Quechua, meaning “village”), can be explored in depth with Machu Picchu Circuit 2. We usually use these circuits by default on our tours, subject to ticket availability.
This is the most popular circuit, as it allows you to get the iconic postcard photo of Machu Picchu while also visiting the lower part of the ruins.
Both circuits highlight the architectural ingenuity of the Incas and the spiritual importance of Machu Picchu’s sacred areas. The two available routes are described below.
Route 2-A: Designed Route
This is the best route for your first visit, as it allows you to enjoy the best views and explore the lower part of Machu Picchu in one visit.
Get ready to capture the postcard-like photo of Machu Picchu as you enjoy a full tour of the ruins, which will give you a deeper insight into the history of Machu Picchu. Maximum time of stay is 2.5 hours.
Route 2-B: The Lower Terraces Route
This route is similar to the classic Designed Route, but offers access to an additional viewpoint.
You will still be able to enjoy the classic view of Machu Picchu with access to most of the main structures. The maximum stay is 2.5 hours.
Machu Picchu Circuit 3 (Royalty Circuit)
Machu Picchu Circuit 3 takes you on a fascinating tour of the main archaeological area, exploring the lower part of the ancient city of Machu Picchu.
These circuits offer a comprehensive exploration of the central precincts of Machu Picchu, highlighting the architectural mastery and cultural significance of the site. The trails are clearly marked and have educational signage. The following circuits are available in four different variants, two of which are only available in high season.
Route 3-A: Huayna Picchu Route
The climb up Huayna Picchu, the imposing peak that towers over Machu Picchu, is the highlight of the circuit. With access to exclusive areas, such as the Temple of the Moon, and steep paths leading to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, the climb is both challenging and rewarding.
This hike takes approximately 3 hours round trip. It is recommended to be in good physical shape and not be afraid of heights.
In addition, this tour includes a visit to the lower terraces. The maximum time of stay is 6 hours.
Route 3-B: Designed Route
This tour will guide you through the lower parts of Machu Picchu, offering excellent photo opportunities. However, you will not get the classic view of Circuits 1 or 2, as these routes are located on higher platforms. On this circuit, you will not have access to Huayna Picchu.
This is one of the less demanding circuits, which makes it an excellent option for older people. The maximum time of stay is 2.5 hours.
Route 3-C: Great Cavern Route (available only in high season)
This circuit is similar to the previous one, with the main difference that it offers access to the Great Cavern, also known as the Temple of the Moon. This fascinating Inca ceremonial temple can only be visited in high season with this ticket.
It provides a unique and less crowded experience of the lower terraces, although it does not offer the classic image of Machu Picchu. The maximum stay is 7 hours.
Route 3-D: Huchuy Picchu Route (only available in high season)
This is the last route of Circuit 3, which guides you through the lower parts of Machu Picchu, with the difference that it includes the hike up Huchuy Picchu mountain, available only in high season. Although lesser known than Huayna Picchu, Huchuy Picchu offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and ruins.
Starting from the registration center itself, the hike to Huchuy Picchu follows part of the trail leading to the top of Huayna Picchu. The route is a short hike on a narrow trail, and the round trip should take approximately 1.5 hours.
To complete this hike, you should be moderately fit, as the steps are quite steep. The maximum time spent is 3.5 hours.
