Location

This fabulous astronomical calendar is located in Peru, in the region of Ica exactly in the pampas of Jumana. Considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1994.
This desert plain of more than 500 square kilometers holds a great archaeological treasure.

What are The Nazca Lines

The Nazca lines are paths drawn on the earth’s surface. They are about 300 drawings in geometric, anthropometric, zoomorphic and phytomorphic shapes with lengths between 50 and 300 meters, the width of these figures can be between 40 and 120 meters and their depth does not exceed 30 centimeters.

Throughout the years, the climate of the area has helped preserve this magnificent work. It is believed that those who built it used grids made with ropes and stakes to translate the drawings to scale.

It is also believed that whoever directed this work had to do it from a very high place. astronomical calendar mystery in the nazca lines

The meanings of these images

The Hummingbird

According to historian Maria Rostworowski, the hummingbird was a tribute to a flying God respected and feared by the settlers, serving as an offering so that this divinity would not punish them with absent rains.

The Monkey

According to belief, the formation of the tail and hands of the monkey geoglyph directly relates to the constellations and the approaching rainy seasons. This Line shows a monkey with nine fingers and a spiral-shaped tail.

The Spider

This Line has both astronomical and religious aspects. Both are related to rainy season predictions. The investigations point out that, being in an extremely arid place, the settlers used the figure to avoid times of droughts.

Giant Bird

The main characteristics of this figure is the snake-shaped neck whose beak is pointing directly to the sunrise. It is considered by scholars as the “Annunciator of the Inti Raymi”, the solar festival of the Incas. astronomical calendar mystery in the nazca lines
