Tungurahua is one of the twenty-four provinces that make up the Republic of Ecuador, located in the center of the country, in the geographical area known as the inter-Andean region or highlands, mainly on the Patate basin. Its administrative capital is the city of Ambato, which is also its largest and most populated city.
It occupies a territory of about 3386.25 km², making it the second smallest province in the country by area, after Cañar. It is bordered to the north by Cotopaxi, to the south by Chimborazo, to the west by Bolivar, to the southeast by Morona Santiago, to the east by Pastaza and to the northeast by Napo.
