Like the mainland of Ecuador, the archipelago is also crossed by the equator, mostly to the north of Isabela Island.\r\n\r\nGalapagos is the second most active volcanically active archipelago on the planet, second only to Hawaii, and falls into the category of hotspots. The most active volcanoes are Cerro Azul, Sierra Negra, Marchena and La Cumbre volcano on Fernandina Island, which is the most active volcano in the archipelago and one of the most active in the world.\r\nAdministratively, Galapagos has been a province of Ecuador since 1973, made up of three cantons, which in turn are islands: San Crist\u00f3bal, Santa Cruz and Isabela.
